Trainer

Dr. Novella Perrin, Ph.D, retired Assistant  Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate  School at the University of Central Missouri in
Warrensburg, was also a professor of sociology and the Director of the UCM Gerontology  Institute. She is a consultant and author of
numerous books and articles as well as a frequent presenter at local, state and national  meetings on aging related issues. Her most  current research focuses on behavioral  management of Alzheimer’s Disease, nurse aide retention, rural aging, elder abuse and aging in place. Dr. Perrin also is active in numerous professional and service organizations.

Penny Shaffer R.N., M.A., is Program Director for Health and Human Services at Johnson County Community College. She has 38 years of nursing experience and specializes in geriatric mental health. Penny has developed several hospital based and outpatient services for seniors with dementia and has served as a mental health consultant to nursing homes and assisted living facilities across western Missouri and east central Kansas for many years.  She has taught dementia care for the Alzheimer’s Association and sits on numerous panels for elder mental health, abuse and neglect issues. Through a grant funded by the International Longevity Society and MetLife, she developed the Dementia Care Certificate course at Johnson County Community College. This course covers all aspects of dementia care and was awarded Innovation of the Year from the League of Innovation for Community Colleges in 2010. Shaffer is a national speaker and published author of articles on aging, dementia and mental health.
